Crisis Communications for IROs How to Help Protect Company Reputation
Sep 10, 2009 11:30 AM MTIROs can't plan for a crisis while in the midst of one. There are several important steps that any organization can take to prepare for unprecedented public attention. Even after the media, shareholders, analysts, competitors and the public jump in, there are proven practices to manage to a successful outcome. Steve Gray, Principal at Rockford Gray, will examine the good, the bad and the ugly in preparing for and making one's way through a crisis.
Among other topics, learn:
What constitutes a crisis?
The need for a thoughtful crisis plan and the elements that comprise it
Roles and responsibilities for executing on a plan
What constitutes success and how to measure it
About the speaker:
Steve Gray, Principal, Rockford Gray
Steve's life in journalism started in 1967 as a newspaper carrier for the morning Syracuse Post-Standard. That launched him on a career as an award winning journalist and now expert counsel on crisis communication and media relations. Steve is a principal in Rockford Gray, a Denver-based firm that specializes in helping organizations prepare for and then survive a media crisis. Rockford Gray works with a diverse client base that includes public companies in telecommunications, mining, brewing, healthcare, entertainment and hospitality, to name a few.
Rockford Gray espouses two simple ideas:
1. Your company's reputation is its #1 asset.
2. A crisis can quickly dilute or destroy the value of that asset.

IRO Program
All of us in investor relations - and at NIRI - recognize today's tough economic conditions. The Rocky Mountain NIRI chapter has a program in place to help support our members during these tough times. It is the IRO (Independent Resource Opportunity) program.
If your company does not reimburse you for attending NIRI meetings, or if you are not currently employed but want to network with other NIRI members and benefit from the educational programs, the IRO program is for you!
To qualify you must be an existing IRO (i.e., a practitioner) member or you must have been one within the past three years. On a first-come, first-served basis, you could be sponsored for $28 of the fee to attend the meeting. Therefore, if you are a member, normally paying $38 to attend, you would only pay $10. If you are a previous member attending now as a guest, rather than paying $55 to attend, you would pay only $27.
All you need to do is submit your confidential request for sponsorship to Becky Winning via phone at (303)722-8388 or email at winning_ink@msn.com. Becky will notify you whether or not you are one of the first five requests. You can be sponsored up to three times a year.
So don't let the fact that you may be unemployed, under-employed or not being reimbursed by your company keep you away from the NIRI Rocky Mountain Chapter meetings. Be one of the first five people to contact Becky Winning and you could be sponsored for the next NIRI meeting.
